Introduction
There is emerging evidence of heterogeneity within treatment-resistance schizophrenia (TRS), with some people not responding to antipsychotic treatment from illness onset and a smaller group becoming treatment-resistant after an initial response period. It has been suggested that these groups have different aetiologies. Few studies have investigated socio-demographic and clinical differences between early and late onset of TRS.
ObjectivesThis study aims to investigate socio-demographic and clinical correlates of late-onset of TRS.
MethodsUsing data from the electronic health records of the South London and Maudsley, we identified a cohort of people with TRS. Regression analyses were conducted to identify correlates of the length of treatment to TRS. Analysed predictors include gender, age, ethnicity, positive symptoms severity, problems with activities of daily living, psychiatric comorbidities, involuntary hospitalisation and treatment with long-acting injectable antipsychotics.
ResultsWe observed a continuum of the length of treatment until TRS presentation. Having severe hallucinations and delusions at treatment start was associated shorter duration of treatment until the presentation of TRS.
ConclusionsOur findings do not support a clear cut categorisation between early and late TRS, based on length of treatment until treatment resistance onset. More severe positive symptoms predict earlier onset of treatment resistance.

Non-technical summary
We summarize some of the past year's most important findings within climate change-related research. New research has improved our understanding of Earth's sensitivity to carbon dioxide, finds that permafrost thaw could release more carbon emissions than expected and that the uptake of carbon in tropical ecosystems is weakening. Adverse impacts on human society include increasing water shortages and impacts on mental health. Options for solutions emerge from rethinking economic models, rights-based litigation, strengthened governance systems and a new social contract. The disruption caused by COVID-19 could be seized as an opportunity for positive change, directing economic stimulus towards sustainable investments.
Technical summaryA synthesis is made of ten fields within climate science where there have been significant advances since mid-2019, through an expert elicitation process with broad disciplinary scope. Findings include: (1) a better understanding of equilibrium climate sensitivity; (2) abrupt thaw as an accelerator of carbon release from permafrost; (3) changes to global and regional land carbon sinks; (4) impacts of climate change on water crises, including equity perspectives; (5) adverse effects on mental health from climate change; (6) immediate effects on climate of the COVID-19 pandemic and requirements for recovery packages to deliver on the Paris Agreement; (7) suggested long-term changes to governance and a social contract to address climate change, learning from the current pandemic, (8) updated positive cost–benefit ratio and new perspectives on the potential for green growth in the short- and long-term perspective; (9) urban electrification as a strategy to move towards low-carbon energy systems and (10) rights-based litigation as an increasingly important method to address climate change, with recent clarifications on the legal standing and representation of future generations.

Neutron scattering studies have indicated that the non-coordinated water at smectite surfaces has a similar mobility to that of bulk water, but that the water coordinated to the cations is immobile on the time scale of the neutron measurements. Thus hydrophylic polymers can readily displace the non-coordinated water and bind to the silicate surface, and to the exchangeable cations through a water-bridge mechanism. Poly(ethylene oxide) molecules with molecular weights up to 4000 appear to be bound to Na-montmorillonite in flattened conformations at the clay surface. Poly(vinyl alcohol) is extensively bound by Na-montmorillonite and by Na-Laponite (a synthetic hectorite-like clay); as binding progresses fewer molecule segments can contact the surface and so at the higher levels of adsorption extensive loops of polymer extend away from the silicate surface. Some polyanions provide good protection for smectites against flocculation with salt. The abilities of such polymers to protect the clays is dependent both on the extents of the charges and on the solution conformations which these polymers can assume.

The patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD) between dense polymorphic markers are shaped by the ancestral population history. It is therefore possible to use multilocus predictors of LD to infer past population history and to infer sharing of identical alleles in quantitative trait locus (QTL) studies. We develop a multilocus predictor of LD for pairs of haplotypes, which we term haplotype homozygosity (HHn): the probability that any two haplotypes share a given number of n adjacent identical markers or ‘runs of homozygosity’. Our method, based on simplified coalescence theory, accounts for recombination and mutation. We compare our HHn predictions, with HHn in simulated populations and with two published predictors of HHn. Our method performs consistently better across a range of population parameters, including populations with a severe bottleneck followed by expansion, compared to two published methods. We demonstrate that we can predict the pattern of HHn observed in dense single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) genotyped in a cattle population, given appropriate historical changes in population size. Our method is practical for use with very large numbers of individuals and dense genome wide polymorphic DNA data. It has potential applications in inferring ancestral population history and QTL mapping studies.

A key question for the implementation of marker-assisted selection (MAS) using markers in linkage disequilibrium with quantitative trait loci (QTLs) is how many markers surrounding each QTL should be used to ensure the marker or marker haplotypes are in sufficient linkage disequilibrium (LD) with the QTL. In this paper we compare the accuracy of MAS using either single markers or marker haplotypes in an Angus cattle data set consisting of 9323 genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) genotyped in 379 Angus cattle. The extent of LD in the data set was such that the average marker–marker r2 was 0·2 at 200 kb. The accuracy of MAS increased as the number of markers in the haplotype surrounding the QTL increased, although only when the number of markers in the haplotype was 4 or greater did the accuracy exceed that achieved when the SNP in the highest LD with the QTL was used. A large number of phenotypic records (>1000) were required to accurately estimate the effects of the haplotypes.

Two samples, GaN silicon-doped and GaN magnesium-doped, were hydrogen implanted and annealed. The low temperature photoluminescence and inelastic light scattering spectroscopy were employed to investigate structural changes as well as the changes in optical electronic transitions.

The heat of hydration of a number of composite cement systems has been studied using isothermal conduction calorimetry (ICC) from ambient temperature to 90°C. The resulting hardened cement paste, from the high temperature regime, was then examined by scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that increasing the hydration temperature increased the rate of heat output for all systems and, at early ages, decreased the porosity of the sample.

The effect of surface oxidation of Cd1−xZnxTe (x = 0.1) detectors by chemical etching in hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution (H2O2) at different concentrations and etching times was investigated by low temperature photoluminescence (PL). The treatment resulted in better surface condition evidenced by the larger I(D0, X)/Idef intensity ratio and the narrower full width at half maximum of the main peak (D0, X). Peak shifts in the PL spectra associated with bound exciton lines and free to bound transition were also observed and attributed to the oxide layer. These surface effects were found to be dependent on H2O2 concentration and etching time. The significance of this surface oxidation on device passivation and the subsequent improvements in the detector performance are also discussed.

We have measured and analyzed optical absorption, Raman scattering and x-ray absorption spectra of CdS nanocrystals grown by solid-state reaction in a borosilicate glass. We observe the appearance and growth of an optical absorption peak which is attributed to CdS nanoparticles. Using x-ray absorption we quantify the progressive replacement of O nearest neighbors of Cd by S with heat treatment and the appearance and growth of a well-defined second nearest neighbor peak.

Summary
The earlier collaborative project of the PPRG (1979–1980; Schopf 1983a) used a great deal of paper. As analytical work neared completion, handwritten “scoreboards” and “hit lists” were compiled to be sure that work proceeded efficiently and that important samples were not missed. As tables of results were prepared, extensive bibliographies were developed relating to stratigraphic relationships and sedimentary ages. Participants in the project reworded the accumulating paper like so many burrowing animals. When, for example, a decision was reached about the age to be estimated for a particular rock unit, multiple tabular entries had to be changed. Much communication focused on keeping the records straight rather than on questions of interpretation.
The “personal-computer revolution” preceded the beginning of the current PPRG project. Many of the researchers involved had already developed computerized databases, and it was resolved that the power and flexibility of this technology would be applied to the sample-tracking and information-management problems of PPRG. Three problem areas were identified: (i) construction of unified bibliographic database that could be searched and which could be used for preparation of the reference list for the final publication; (ii) management of the sample inventory and laboratory work; and (iii) compilation of results and related information. Systems were eventually developed in all of these areas as described briefly below. In spite of efforts at coordination, the degree of integration initially hoped for was not achieved, principally because the databases were, in their organization a well as contents, the result of individual efforts.
